Plugins and/or extensions are an easy way to expand the power of most modern IDEs.

The good IDEs all have a rich ecosystem of plugins/extensions, to add additional functionality to your IDE.

Common uses:

  • compiling code
  • running shell scripts
  • integrating version control
  • project management software integration

But what they can do is nearly limitless.
