Turns out that you can point Mac Time Machine to a disk image instead of a partition!



  1. Create the disk image (disk util or spundle).
  2. Mount disk image
  3. in terminal:
    sudo tmutil setdestination /Volumes/ImageNameHere
  4. Open Time Machine preferences
