Gedit

(Gnome Edit)

"gedit is the text editor of the GNOME desktop environment."

This is the default GUI editor on several distributions of Linux.

If you:

  • Want to edit a file
  • Are on a popular Linux Desktop distrobution
  • Don't need a full IDE
  • hopefully because these are simple changes

This is probably what you should use.

It has very few features, but has syntax highlighting for a hand full of languages.

Mostly people use it because it's the system's default for several file types, and is more than "good enough" for certain tasks
